Welcome from the Head of School

Welcome to Gig Harbor Academy. I hope you use these Web pages to explore and learn more about our independent, co-ed, Pre-School through 5th grade day program. While the photos and literature on each area of school life will give you a sense of the environment, visiting our more than 10 acres of land is the best way to truly capture the spirit of the Academy.

When I first walked on campus several years ago, I felt at home. I was struck by how welcoming the students were and by the strong connection between the students and teachers. I knew then that it was not only a place where I wanted to work, but also a place where I wanted to raise my children.

Your child is our focus. For over 30 years Gig Harbor Academy has been a leader in providing an educational environment that balances academic rigor with a deep sense of personal attention where every child is known. Ever since the founder of the school Ann Reynolds welcomed the first students on campus in 1976, the ideals of community, compassion, respect, and service have served as a foundation for the Academy. Today, the Academy continues to provide structure and support in a child-centered environment that exposes students to a wealth of opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.

What sets our school apart is that words like community, stewardship and critical thinking are not just terms we define, they are qualities by which we all live and work. We understand the value of a traditional education, and at the same time we embrace innovation and new technologies that will prepare our students for the ever-changing world. Our students are personally cared for by dedicated and creative teachers, benefit daily from core curricular studies in math, science, English and social studies as well as art, music, foreign language, technology and physical education, experience a beautiful outdoor campus with nature trails, study the environment up close in our wetlands and are part of a community where we gather twice a week for an all school time of sharing, singing and affirmation.

The other week I accompanied our fourth graders as they led their first grade buddies on the nature trail that borders wetlands on our campus. Along the way I was intrigued by how one fourth grade boy spent time sharing with a first grade student about what his teacher had taught him the previous day; a lesson on the different plant life in the wetlands and how it would change season to season. There was a sense of empowerment in the older student’s voice and a sense of wonder in the younger student’s eyes. Later that same day I watched the children on the playground and witnessed how excited the younger student was when the older student said hello to him. Standing there I was reminded of what makes a Gig Harbor Academy education unique; we are a community that learns firsthand, understands the importance of being good stewards of the environment who are leaders in providing for a sustainable future and experiences a sense of belonging.

The partnership that exists between parents and the school on our campus is essential in providing an environment where a child will find success. Parents are actively involved in their child’s learning and make for an important presence on campus. We are not a school of children but a school of families.

Gig Harbor Academy is not the right place for everyone. The child that wants to work hard and take advantage of the unique educational environment and support at the Academy will find success. Gig Harbor Academy students are respectful of the diversity of backgrounds and cultures represented here. Those who choose to take advantage of a Gig Harbor Academy education will be prepared for whatever future they can envision.

If you are intrigued by what you read or see, spend a day with us and experience Gig Harbor Academy. If you are like me, you will want to stay.

All the best,
