Our Specialists

The Gig Harbor Academy Specialist Program includes Art, Music, Spanish, Physical Education and Technology. Beginning in Preschool, students are exposed to the Specialist Programs at an age appropriate level on a weekly basis. Each specialist instructor is certified in their particular area and are experts in their field.

 

 
Ana Steel

Ana Steel, Art Specialist
Ana Steel received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, an Instructional 1 K-12 Art Teacher Certification from Philadelphia College of Art, and studied Art History and Humanities for two years in the graduate school at Manhattanville College in Purchase NY. Ana has taught K-12 visual art for more than three decades at private independent schools in Malvern, PA, Greenwich, CT, and Tacoma, WA. Ana led a fine art student tour throughout Italy.

 

 

Lynn Swanson

Lynn Swanson, Music Specialist
Lynn Swanson was born and raised in Tacoma, WA and graduated from Central Washington University with both her BA Mus and MA Mus in Music Education. For fourteen years, Lynn was the elementary music specialist at Alder Elementary School in the Reynolds School District of Portland, OR. Lynn joined the GHA faculty in 2010 as the Music Specialist. Lynn produces two music programs annually for GHA, which are much anticipated events throughout the year.

 

Veronica Vanslyke

Kari Chavez-Cox, Physical Education Specialist
Kari Chavez-Cox has a BA in Elementary Education K-8, and endorsements in P-3 Early Childhood Education and 4-12 Psychology from Saint Martin’s University. Her previous eleven years of teaching and substituting experience led her to focus on Physical Education. Coach Chavez understands the importance of providing children with an engaging environment that promotes and inspires positive sportsmanship, healthy choices and physical activity for a lifetime.

 

Xinia Agee

Xinia Agee, Spanish Specialist
The youngest of thirteen children, Xinia Agee was born in Limon, Costa Rica. Xinia taught both pre and elementary school through 1994 in the capital city of San Jose. Señora Agee has also taught with the Department of Defense at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe, Hawaii, having the opportunity to teach children from all across the nation including Texas, Virginia, Colorado, California and Hawaii.

 

Jerry Guarino

Jerry Guarino, Technology Specialist
Jerry Guarino has over eight years teaching experience with children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Jerry has his teaching certificate from California State University, a ME in Educational Media and Instructional Technology from Boston University and MA in Languages. Before he became a teacher, Mr. G. spent over 20 years in the technology profession. Jerry is an author and screenwriter. His short stories have been published by literary magazines in the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain.
