Board of Directors

Gig Harbor Academy is an independent school governed by a Board of Directors comprised of current and past parents of Gig Harbor Academy students and community members who volunteer their time and expertise. The Board of Directors meets regularly to provide strategic insight and planning that ensures sustainability and ongoing development of Gig Harbor Academy's educational programs.

The Board of Trustees has three core responsibilities:

    1. Fiduciary: concerning itself with the stewardship of tangible assets and ensuring the school is financially sustainable;

    2. Strategic: building a strategic partnership with the Head of School to develop long and short-range goals and plans;

    3. Generative: concerning itself with setting the future direction of GHA. The Board of Directors provides direction through planning, developing, and evaluating its policies.

Homer Smith, President
Homer Smith has been a member of The Gig Harbor Academy community for the past four years. What started as a search for a full- day Kindergarten Prep program quickly evolved into a greater commitment as his family fell in love with GHA’s teaching philosophies and the campus’ natural setting. As a part of that commitment to GHA, Homer joined the Board of Directors in 2017, focusing on the financial health of the school in his role as Treasurer.

Since joining the GHA community, Homer has developed a passion for education and has seen first-hand how a school that is focused on critical thinking and character building can positively impact the children it educates.  Homer believes GHA is unique in its ability to focus on each individual child. The school helps children understand how to find their own passion for learning while teaching them important life skills that will help them while they are at GHA and into the future. Each student’s success is a testament to the exceptional group of teachers, specialists and staff who every day!

Homer is the owner/founder of Hearthstone Wealth Management in downtown Gig Harbor.  He and his wife Val live with their two daughters who both are both enrolled at GHA.
